New Hyde Park holding meeting to oppose LIRR third track

The village of New Hyde Park is hosting a public meeting to voice opposition to the LIRR’s controversial third track project.
The meeting is an opportunity for village officials, and possibly also representatives from the MTA and LIRR, to present the project’s latest updates, New Hyde Park Mayor Robert Lofaro said.
Residents will also be encouraged to voice their opinions and concerns about the project, which calls for a 9.8 mile third track to be installed in Nassau County, from Floral Park to Hicksville. This would affect villages along the LIRR Main Line, such as New Hyde Park, Mineola, Westbury, Floral Park, and others.
“New Hyde Park will continue to take a front-and-center role on the opposition to the Main Line project unless we’re convinced by the MTA and LIRR that there is benefit to the residents,” Lofaro said.
The village of New Hyde Park has formed a task force to research the effect of the LIRR third rail project. Village officials said they could accept eliminating some grade crossings, but not if this meant more freight coming through New Hyde Park.
The public meeting will be on March 3 at 8 p.m. at the Marcus Christ Community Center, located at 1420 Jericho Tpke.
