New Hyde Park man arrested in Dairy Barn heist

A New Hyde Park man was arrested early Sunday, hours after a robbery at a Dairy Barn in his hometown, police said.

Michael Daddario, 24, of 22 N. Fourth St., is suspected of being the man who reached over the store counter Saturday evening, pushed the cashier, and opened the cash-register drawer, fleeing with as much cash as he could grab, Nassau County police said.

The robbery happened about 6:30 p.m. at the Dairy Barn, at 938 Hillside Ave.

Daddario first took a pack of cigarettes off a rack in the store, put them on the counter, and demanded cash, police said. Before the cashier, 20, could comply, Daddario pushed him aside, and reached over and pushed the button to open the cash register, police said.

He fled with the money on foot along Franklin Avenue and onto Irons Place. No one was hurt. Police did not say how much money was taken.

"There were no injuries, thank God," said store employee Matthew Liebman, who was not the cashier working at the time of the robbery.

Daddario was arrested at 1:50 a.m. on his street, police said in a later news release. He will be charged with third-degree robbery. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday at First District Court, Hempstead.

In the news release, police did not say what led them to Daddario.
