Newly born baby girl left at Wantagh fire house, police say
A baby girl born Thanksgiving morning was left at Wantagh fire house headquarters on Thursday afternoon, Nassau County police said.
The infant was handed over at 11:46 a.m. to officials at the Park Avenue fire station, which is a designated Safe Haven drop off, according to Tim Jaccard, the Safe Haven coordinator for Nassau police.
The baby girl, just 3 hours old and weighing 4 pounds 2 ounces, wore a “makeshift diaper and appeared to be healthy,” Jaccard said. She was later taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation, he said.
Jaccard said the child is the 15th infant received this year in New York State by the AMT Children of Hope Foundation, which he founded. The foundation, a Long Island-based nonprofit founded by members of the Ambulance Medical Technicians of the Nassau County Police Department, accepts and provides medical care for relinquished infants.
