NYPD: NICE bus that crashed into Queens pizza store swerved to avoid cyclist

A Nassau County bus struck and injured a 22-year-old bicyclist who rode through a red light in southeast Queens early Saturday morning, before the vehicle crashed into a Papa John's pizza restaurant, the NYPD said.

The N6 Nassau Inter-County Express bus was traveling north on Francis Lewis Boulevard in Queens Village through a green light shortly before 1:30 a.m. when it swerved unsuccessfully to avoid a bicyclist who was traveling westbound on 90th Avenue, police said.

The bus then crashed through the front door of the pizza chain, which was closed at the time.

The bicyclist, who was not identified by police, was taken to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and treated for a broken jaw, injured wrist and ribs and a possible collapsed lung.

A preliminary investigation by the bus company indicated the bicyclist was on his cellphone at the time of the crash, according to NICE spokesman Andy Kraus. The NYPD could not confirm that detail.

The three passengers on the bus, as well as the driver, were also treated at North Shore for minor injuries.
