No sign of Long Beach surfer
Divers, fishermen and a helicopter search team continued the hunt Tuesday for a popular Long Beach High School surf coach and math teacher who has not been seen since he disappeared Sunday while surfing near South Sumatra, Indonesia.
Officials said the weather had improved Tuesday off the remote Tanjung Setia Beach, allowing dive teams to look for Daniel Bobis, 32.
About 20 people had joined the search Tuesday, which began about 9:30 a.m. local time. Indonesia is 11 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time.
By 11 a.m., the search was still on, although "they had yet to find anything," said Mike Morey, a spokesman for Sen. Charles Schumer, who has been in contact with the family and U.S. diplomats in Indonesia.
Last night, hundreds of friends and relatives of Bobis, an environmental activist and experienced surfer, again gathered for a brief vigil, this time at Temple Emanu-El in Long Beach.
Some in attendance continued to ask for contributions to help Bobis' family pay for expenses incurred during the search effort.
Family members would not comment last night.
