Emergency crews responded to a fatal auto accident early Saturday on the Southern State Parkway near Exit 20, State Police said. Police have identified the driver in a one-car fatal accident on the Southern State Parkway as Timothy Kearney, 23, of North Baldwin.

Kearney was pronounced dead at the scene, between exits 20 and 21, about 4:20 a.m. Saturday.

Kearney was westbound when his Toyota Camry went into the center median, striking the guide rail. The car overturned, slid off the parkway and struck a tree.

"By the time the troopers got there, it was engulfed in flames," State Trooper Tammy Mickoliger said.

The accident remains under investigation by the New York State Police. Witnesses are asked to call 516-561-8883.
