More now eligible for rent hike exemptions
The North Hempstead Town board has made more seniors and disabled residents in rent-controlled units eligible for exemptions from rent increases.
The town has increased the maximum income limit to $40,000 from $29,000 for those who qualify for the Disability Rent Increase Exemption and the Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption, both of which are administered on Long Island by the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal.
Exemptions are for rent-controlled buildings or residences that are regulated by the Emergency Tenant Protection Act, and are in municipalities that have approved the exemption programs.
Qualifying residents can seek exemptions at the New York State Homes & Community Renewal website: nyshcr.org or by calling 866-275-3427.
