A North Merrick woman escaped unharmed Tuesday after roofers working on her house woke her up when they saw the house was on fire, Nassau police said.

Police did not identify the woman, 73, who was sleeping inside the house at 1715 Sutton Place.

"The house sustained extensive damage," police said in a news release.

Roofers first noticed that power inside the house had been shut down and went to alert the owner, police said. Then, the workers realized that smoke was pouring out from inside the house.

The fire, police said, was not suspicious. The cause is under investigation.

About 75 firefighters from seven departments responded to the blaze, which occurred at 3:12 p.m.

A firefighter from East Meadow Fire Department who suffered head and neck burns was treated at a hospital and released.
