Middle schooler stable after hit by car in Glen Head, official says

A sixth-grade student at a Glen Head middle school was hit by a car Wednesday morning as he was going to class, a school official said.

Edward Melnick, superintendent of North Shore schools, said the student, whom he identified only as a boy about 11 years old, was crossing Kissam Lane about 8 a.m. on his way to North Shore Middle School when he was struck.

The boy was airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, Melnick said.

Melnick said he did not know the nature of the boy's injuries, but the student was awake at the time he was airlifted.

"He was conscious. He was talking," Melnick said.

Albert Cousins, principal at North Shore High School, said in an email to parents alerting them of the accident that the child was in stable condition.

He said in the email that the child was hit about 180 yards south of "the middle school and high school entrances."

The email also said a middle-school counselor accompanied the student to the hospital.

Cousins asked in the email that parents speak with their children about crossing Glen Cove Avenue at the light, where a crossing guard is stationed.

According to Melnick, police at the scene said the boy was crossing between two parked cars when he was struck and that the car that hit him was traveling below the speed limit. The driver stayed at the scene, Melnick said.
