At least five people were hurt Friday morning, one seriously, after a chain-reaction crash involving five vehicles on Northern State Parkway at Route 106 in Jericho, State Police said.

The eastbound lanes were closed for about four hours after the collision, which police said occurred shortly after a previous three-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes.

Following the first crash, at about 6:55 a.m., traffic in the eastbound lanes “slowed almost to a stop,” a State Police news release said.

“A vehicle unable to stop struck the back of another vehicle causing a chain reaction encompassing five vehicles,” police said in a statement.

Six people were involved in the eastbound crash, and five were taken to local hospitals, one with serious injuries, police said. The person with serious injuries was still hospitalized on Saturday, State Police spokesman Trooper Daniel Ahlgrim said. The other injuries were “non-life-threatening,” he said.

The eastbound lanes reopened at about 10:45 a.m. The westbound lanes were closed for about an hour, police said.

Traffic camera footage from the scene showed three vehicles crashed against the center median just east of the Route 106 overpass with multiple ambulances and police vehicles on site.
