NYPD: Cop from LI charged in son's assault suspended

The NYPD officer charged with assaulting his 3-year-old son has been suspended without pay after a nine-year career with 14 awards, police officials said Monday.

Jason Sharp, 37, of Bellmore, was arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead on three misdemeanor counts of third-degree assault, endangering the welfare of a child and fourth-degree criminal mischief.

Judge Fred J. Hirsch ordered Sharp, who is assigned to the Brooklyn gang unit, released on his own recognizance. The judge also granted three temporary orders of protection barring Sharp from harassing his wife, his son and a 5-year-old child.

The New York Police Department said Sharp joined the force in 2004 and was assigned to the 75th Precinct before going to the gang unit. He has received 14 awards, two for meritorious police duty and 12 for excellent police duty, NYPD said. Details on the awards were not immediately available Monday.

Authorities contend Sharp punched his son in the face, "causing swelling and bruising to the victim's right eye, cheek and the bridge of his nose." The boy's injuries "necessitated treatment at a hospital," according to a Nassau police statement in court documents.

According to Nassau police, the boy told them, "My daddy punched me in the face."

The incident occurred about 4:30 a.m. Saturday, records show.

Authorities also say Sharp punched a hole in the wall of a hallway on the second floor of his Bellmore home while arguing with his wife.

Nassau police said Sharp told them, "I had an argument with my wife and punched the wall; I had a few drinks today."

Sharp is due back in Nassau First District Court in Hempstead on March 18.
