An ice rink in Bethpage had to be evacuated Tuesday night after a machine used to cool the ice malfunctioned, causing a strong odor, police said.
No one was injured.
Nassau County police said the incident occurred at 10:10 p.m. at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center at Bethpage Community Park on Stewart Avenue in Bethpage.
Skaters were using the rink when the odor became apparent. Some told Newsday it smelled like ammonia.
Police could not verify that on Wednesday.
