Off-duty cop saves drowning toddler in Bellmore, officials say
An off-duty Suffolk County police officer saved a drowning 2-year-old girl with CPR on Sunday in Bellmore, authorities said.
The child is in stable condition at NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola, officials said.
The girl was discovered in a pool at a house on Shore Road in Bellmore, Fire Chief Thomas Stoerger said.
“He performed CPR on the girl and brought her back,” Stoerger said. “There’s absolutely no doubt he saved that child’s life.
Nassau police said in a statement that the Suffolk police officer, a detective, is a neighbor and pulled the child from the pool to perform CPR. The girl regained consciousness.
The officer was not named in the statement, and Suffolk County police did not immediately have more information.
The fire department was called at 4:09 p.m., Stoerger said. A fire department ambulance, with a Nassau County paramedic, took her to the hospital.
