Gas tanker truck overturns near Roosevelt Field mall, spilling 800 gallons

Old Country Road near the Roosevelt Field mall was reopened Tuesday morning, about 12 hours after a 12,000-gallon gasoline tanker overturned at Clinton Road, Nassau police said.
The 2025 Kenworth gasoline tanker was fully loaded about 8 p.m. Monday when its driver attempted a left-hand turn from Glen Cove Road onto Old Country Road, causing it to flip onto its side, according to a Nassau County Police Department news release.
More than 800 gallons of gas spilled from the vehicle, a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation spokesperson told Newsday. About 600 gallons were recovered from the roadway by an "environmental contractor," while about 300 gallons of gas mixed with water were recovered from roadway drains. The drainage system was later "flushed," the spokesperson said, adding that the incident did not impact surface water or groundwater.
The driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital, police said. The crash caused traffic to be detoured in the vicinity for several hours.
The more than 11,000 gallons of gasoline that remained in the tanker were "transferred to a secondary tanker truck," the state DEC spokesperson said.
Firefighters from Westbury, Garden City and Carle Place joined the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Hazardous Materials Division to contain the spill. State DEC "spill response experts" and police officers also responded, the department spokesperson said.
