Ousted social services commish heading to health

Janet DeMarzo, the former Suffolk social services commissioner who failed to muster the legislative votes for a second term in the $155,000-a-year post, is moving to the county health department.

DeMarzo, currently chief deputy social services commissioner, is slated to become a deputy health commissioner, replacing Matt Miner, who now makes $133,000 annually. He's joining Brookhaven Supervisor Mark Lesko to become director of operations and run the town landfill. Lesko said Miner will receive about $146,000 a year.

Ironically, Levy pressed hard during budget talks to increase the deputy health commissioner post from a grade 36 to 38 to keep Miner, who was slated to make $144,000 this year. Now, part of the extra money will go to holdover Republican DeMarzo - a grade 37 making $138,000.
