Passerby foils robbery outside Hicksville check-cashing store
A Bethpage man was arrested late afternoon Thursday in Hicksville after police said he tried to steal cash from a man who'd just cashed a check.
The robbery was thwarted by a passerby who Nassau County police said stopped his car to assist the victim, holding the suspect until responding officers arrived.
The attempted robbery occurred outside a check-cashing store on West John Street near Newbridge Road at about 5:15 p.m., police said.
Police said the victim, a 42-year-old man, had just cashed his check and was counting his money when he was punched in the face by Timothy Boyle, 46, of 4 Albergo Ct., who then struggled with the victim -- trying to take his money.
The passerby, identified only as a 44-year-old man, then rushed to stop the attack.
Police said the victim suffered "redness and discomfort" to his eye but did not require medical attention. There were no other injuries reported.
Police arrested Boyle, charging him with third-degree robbery. He faces arraignment Friday in First District Court in Hempstead, police said.
