A pedestrian was killed and another left in critical condition in two separate crashes in New Cassel 10 minutes apart Sunday, Nassau police said.

At 6:20 p.m., a 44-year-old man was struck by an eastbound 2015 Chevrolet pickup truck on Old Country Road at the intersection of Arlington Street.

The pedestrian suffered severe trauma and was transported to a local area hospital, where he was pronounced dead by a physician at 7:14 p.m., police said. On Tuesday, the Nassau police identified the victim as Juan Carlos Amaya Gutierrez of Westbury.

The 24-year-old male driver of the pickup remained at the scene. There were no other injuries, police said.

Ten minutes after the first crash, a 17-year-old was crossing Prospect Avenue near Kinkel Street when he was struck by a westbound 2009 Honda on Prospect Avenue.

The boy suffered injuries to his head and chest and was airlifted to a hospital for treatment, where he remains in critical condition, police said. There were no updates Tuesday on the boy's condition and his name was not released.

The 54-year-old female driver of the Honda remained at the scene and was not injured.

Both crash investigations are ongoing, police said.
