An 81-year-old man who was crossing Old Country Road on foot in Garden City on Friday morning was struck by a vehicle and died of his injuries, Nassau police said.

The accident caused “severe head trauma” to Richard Bakalor of Merrick, police said. He was pronounced dead at NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola at 9:03 a.m.

A 2015 Toyota driven by a 52-year-old man hit the victim about 8:30 a.m., police said. The vehicle was making a right turn from Kellum Place onto Old Country Road.

Garden City police handled the initial response. The Nassau homicide squad was investigating, but police said no criminality was immediately apparent.

Bakalor’s family declined to comment Friday evening.
