An 81-year-old man was hit by a Jeep and seriously injured Sunday morning as he crossed a Bellmore street, Nassau County police said.
A 70-year-old man driving a 2005 Jeep Wrangler southbound on Bedford Avenue struck the pedestrian as he crossed from the east to the west side of the street, police said.
Police did not identify the driver and reported no apparent criminality in the accident.
The crash, which occurred at around 6:30 a.m. in front of St. Barnabas Church, briefly shut down Bedford Avenue, police said. The street was reopened before 9 a.m., they said.
The pedestrian, whom police also did not identify, suffered severe head trauma and was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment, police said late Sunday.
The Jeep was impounded for a safety inspection and the cause of the accident is under investigation, police said.
