A 24-year-old West Hempstead man was arrested and charged with vehicular assault after he critically injured a pedestrian while under the influence of drugs, police said.

Charles Eid of 147 Broadway was charged with second-degree vehicular assault for driving while ability impaired by drugs following the crash on Hempstead Turnpike in Franklin Square Tuesday at 9:45 a.m., Nassau County police said.

Police said Eid was driving a 2010 Jeep east on Hempstead Turnpike when he rear-ended a 1999 Ford sport utility vehicle stopped at a red light at Rintin Street. The force of the impact pushed the Ford forward, and it struck a pedestrian, 50, who was crossing the street, police said.

Police said the pedestrian suffered "severe head trauma" and was in critical condition. The victim was not identified.

Police said Eid complained of neck and back pain and was transported to a hospital for evaluation. No other injuries were reported by police.

Eid was scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
