A 59-year-old woman was killed Thursday when she was struck by a car while trying to cross the street in Valley Stream at an intersection with no power, Nassau police said.

According to detectives, the Hempstead woman was trying to cross Linden Street at Franklin Avenue when she was hit by a 2007 Nissan Altima going north on Franklin Avenue.

The driver was a 37-year-old Valley Stream man.

The victim was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead by a staff physician, police said.

At the time, due to power outages, the traffic light and several streetlights at that intersection were not working, police said.

There have been nine deaths on Long Island related to damage caused by the superstorm Sandy.

It was not clear Thursday night whether the outage that affected the intersection was storm-related or whether that played a role in the accident.

No charges were filed and the car was released to the driver after safety checks.
