A 71-year-old man crossing Newbridge Road in North Bellmore on Monday was struck by an SUV and later pronounced dead at a hospital, the Nassau County Police Department said.

About 2:16 p.m, a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee heading north on Newbridge struck the man as he crossed "eastbound in the vicinity of Frisch Place," the police said in a news release.

The pedestrian, whose identity was not immediately available, suffered "severe head trauma," according to the police. After he was transported to a hospital, a physician pronounced him dead, the police said.

The SUV's driver, a 65-year-old man, remained at the scene, according to police. Authorities said no other injuries were reported.
