Pedestrian hit on Hempstead Turnpike is still in critical condition

A 79-year-old pedestrian who was injured when he was struck on the Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown remained in critical condition Sunday, Nassau County police said.

The man, who police have not identified, suffered head trauma and broken bones in the Saturday accident.

Police said the man was attempting to cross the turnpike at Grassy Lane shortly before 5 p.m. when he was hit by an eastbound vehicle driven by an 85-year-old, police said.

The victim was taken to a hospital, police said. No other injuries were reported.

Police said there is no criminality involved.

Hempstead Turnpike continues to be one of Long Island's deadliest roadways for pedestrians, according to a report released in March by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, a transportation watchdog group.
