A collection of pet birds are thought to have perished Saturday night in this Massapequa Park fire. Firefighters answering a call to the Second Avenue residence about 10 p.m. found the fire in the room with the birds. It was under control in about 30 minutes. The occupant was taken to a hospital with injuries that were described as not serious. The fire is being investigated. "A large number of birds" may have perished in a fire at a Massapequa Park home Saturday night, Massapequa Fire Department Chief Peter Anglim said.

"The cages were in the room where the fire was," he said.

About 75 firefighters from Massapequa, South Farmingdale and North Massapequa departments responded to the 10:59 p.m. fire at the Second Avenue split-level home, Anglim said. They battled the blaze about 45 minutes.

The home's occupant, a woman who fire officials identified only as being in her 50s, was taken to a hospital, he said.

The Nassau County Fire Marshall is investigating the fire, he said. The Fire Marshall could not be immediately reached Sunday morning.
