Nassau County police continued to search Saturday for one of the two pit bulls that mauled a North Merrick woman on Thursday.

The victim of the attack, Shashi Sharma, 62, of Sandra Lane, is improving after undergoing surgery at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, according to her husband, Mukesh Sharma.

"It's a very traumatic thing that happened to my wife," Sharma said Friday. "She has improved, but right now we just want to be together."

Sharma was attacked by two pit bulls as she walked by a senior center on Meadowbrook Road in North Merrick on Thursday morning, police said. She suffered deep lacerations to both legs and her left arm.

After the attack, police shot and killed one of the pit bulls, but the other, described as tan with white in its belly area, escaped.

Law enforcement officials said Friday that they would search by foot and by air for the missing dog.

If the dog is spotted, police urge the public not to approach the animal and to immediately call 911.
