Town of North Hempstead board officials are considering a pilot program for three town parks that would allow dogs on leashes.
They are expected to set a date for a public hearing on the matter Tuesday night during the regular town board meeting.
Included would be Michael J. Tully Park in New Hyde Park, Mary Jane Davies Park in Manhasset and North Hempstead Beach Park (boardwalk only, not sand) in Port Washington.
Currently, no dogs are allowed in any of the town's 52 parks.
"It's a move towards making our parks more dog friendly," said town spokeswoman Carole Trottere. "The town will see how it goes with the three parks and then will consider, at a future time, whether to expand the program to all the town parks."
