The sneaker of a hit-and-run victim rests on eastbound Sunrise Highway at North Ocean Avenue in Freeport after a pedestrian was fatally struck by a car at approximately 1 a.m. Police are searching for the driver of the vehicle who fled the scene. A pedestrian walking across Sunrise Highway in Freeport was struck and killed in a hit-and-run early Monday, Nassau police said.

The victim, a 29-year-old man who has not been identified, was crossing at South Bergen Place at about 1 a.m. when he was struck by a dark-colored SUV, said Det. Sgt. Anthony Repalone.

The man was taken to South Nassau Communities Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m., Repalone said.

The SUV fled east on Sunrise Highway, witnesses told police. The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.
