A Shirley man who was clamming on the Long Island Sound was arrested Monday morning after pointing a rifle at other clammers.

According to the Nassau County Police Marine Bureau, John Mirabito, 59, of 568 Starlight Lane, Shirley, was clamming on the Long Island Sound in Glen Cove about 8 a.m. Police said Mirabito was operating a 21-foot Steiger boat when it struck another 21-foot Steiger carrying two men who also were clamming.

A verbal argument ensued, police said, and Mirabito went into his cabin and retrieved a rifle, pointing it at the men.

The men left the scene and then notified police. The Marine Bureau responded and arrested Mirabito, who is being charged with two counts of second-degree menacing.

Mirabito is due to be arraigned Tuesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
