Police: Cop hurt trying to stop shoplifter

An off-duty Nassau County police officer was assaulted and knocked to the ground Thursday by a shoplifting suspect outside a Roslyn pharmacy, after the suspect "refused all commands and fought with the officer causing him to fall and injure his right hand and left knee," the police said.

Mark Trinkler, 32, of East Elmhurst, Queens, was arrested at 7:10 p.m. outside a CVS store on Willis Avenue on charges of second-degree assault, petty larceny and three counts of possessing fraudulent prescription slips, police said.

The off-duty Nassau officer saw Trinkler leave the store with stolen merchandise, followed by a CVS store manager, and the officer tried to make an arrest. As the suspect resisted arrest, another off-duty officer -- an NYPD officer -- intervened and held Trinkler until more Nassau officers arrived to assist, police said.

The injured Nassau officer was taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released.

During arrest processing, police said, they searched Trinkler and found the three fake prescriptions.

He faces arraignment Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
