A Nassau County police detective remained hospitalized in critical condition after a Friday motorcycle accident in Albertson, police said Monday.

The detective was off duty and driving his motorcycle to help with a charity event when he was struck by a vehicle, officials said. The accident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. on I U Willets Road, police said.

The detective, a 30-year department veteran whom police officials declined to name, works in the department's Central Detectives Squad, acting Nassau Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter said.

"He's in our thoughts and prayers -- both him and his family -- during this time," Krumpter said.

Krumpter declined to release details of the crash, but said no charges had been filed against the other driver. The investigation is ongoing, he said.

Glenn Ciccone, president of the Nassau Detective's Association, said the detective is in critical but stable condition.

"He's really banged up -- some broken ribs, broken nose, some bleeding on his brain," Ciccone said. "He's on a ventilator. . . . We believe he's going to get better. I think he has a long road ahead, though."

Ciccone said one of the detective's adult sons told him, "My dad was actually meeting my brother to hand out fliers for a charity that was going on the next morning," when the crash occurred.

"The whole police family is praying and supporting his family during this difficult time," Ciccone said.

"He's a great guy who's loved by everybody. He's a great detective."
