Police: DWI charge for driver who hit man
A Freeport man is under arrest, charged with vehicular assault and driving while intoxicated following an accident Wednesday night in Rockville Centre that critically injured a 25-year-old pedestrian, police said.
The crash occurred as the victim crossed Sunrise Highway near North Centre Avenue on Wednesday at 11:50 p.m. Nassau County police said John Tobin, 23, of Robert Street was driving his 1998 Ford Explorer east in the right lane when he struck the man, who was crossing the road from north to south.
Tobin then collided with the center median and overturned, the SUV coming to rest on its roof in the westbound lanes, police said. He was uninjured.
Police have not identified the victim, 23, who was taken to a hospital with two fractured legs and internal injuries.
Tobin was charged with second-degree vehicular assault as well as two counts of DWI, police said. He is scheduled for arraignment Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead.
