Using an electronic alarm system designed to aid domestic violence victims, a Franklin Square woman early Monday helped the police find and arrest an ex-boyfriend who had allegedly recently abducted her and threatened her with a hammer.

Fourth Precinct police arrested Quandell A. Cooper, 24, of 116-27 167th St., Queens, shortly before 1 a.m. Monday, charging him with second-degree robbery, second-degree assault and unlawful imprisonment.

The police had previously issued the woman a CAPER alarm system (an acronym for Criminal Apprehension Provided by Electronic Response). The system, often used in domestic violence cases in which there is a credible threat, consists of a radio transmitter installed in the home, and a pendant equipped with an alarm button. It sends a signal directly to the Nassau County police communications center and officers are dispatched without the need to dial 911.

The arrest came after a Saturday incident in which Cooper met the woman, 24, on Dutch Broadway in Elmont, around 4:30 p.m., got in her car, then punched her and threatened her with a hammer, police said. He forced her to drive him to Roosevelt Field mall, then to Queens, and then back to the mall -- where she escaped, police said.

She returned to her Franklin Square home and called the police to report the abduction. She had minor injuries to her neck and shoulder, and Cooper had kept her car, a 2006 BMW, police said.

Police said they searched for Cooper but could not find him, so they installed the CAPER alarm system in the woman's home.

Then Monday morning, "Cooper arrived at the victim's home and began to pound on the door in an attempt to gain access," police said.

She activated the alarm and Fourth Precinct officers responded to the home, found Cooper and arrested him. They also recovered the woman's car.

Cooper was arraigned Monday at First District Court in Hempstead.
