Police, firefighters free trapped osprey fledgling in Wantagh

Wantagh firefighters and Nassau police freed a osprey fledgling that was tangled in fishing line atop a 75-foot-high light pole Saturday afternoon.
The young osprey was attempting to fly, but trapped by fishing line that was apparently part of its nest, police said.
The Wantagh fire department and Nassau's emergency services unit responded and cut the bird free, according to a police news release.
The osprey's leg was injured. Emergency responders contacted Wildlife in Need of Rescue and Rehabilitation, a North Massapequa nonprofit that plans to rehabilitate the bird and release it, the release said.
A Nassau police spokeswoman had no other information on the incident, including its location and how emergency responders reached the nest.
The Wantagh fire department could not be reached for comment Saturday night.
