A 36-year-old Freeport man was arrested Saturday, accused of striking another man on the hand with a machete after the victim and several other males attacked him, Nassau County police said.

Alfred Santiago, of 45 Broadway, was charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the assault that occurred at 9:04 p.m. on Saturday in front of 90B Broadway in Freeport.

Santiago was held on $5,000 bond or $2,500 cash bail at his arraignment Sunday in First District Court in Hempstead. He is due back in court July 8 in Mineola.

According to detectives, Santiago was involved in a physical altercation with several males. After getting kicked several times by his assailants the defendant went home, retrieved the machete and went back to the same location, police said.

Police said Santiago found one of the males who had kicked him earlier, then struck him on the hand with the machete.

The 23-year-old victim, who was cut on his hand, was taken to a hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported.
