A West Hempstead man faces a gun charge after being stopped Tuesday for speeding and changing lanes without using his signal on the Southern State Parkway in East Farmingdale, State Police said.

Rod Ewart, 40, was driving a blue Cadillac at 76 mph and changing lanes in eastbound parkway traffic at about 8:22 p.m., police said. A trooper stopped the car near the Route 110 exit and noticed Ewart "appeared nervous," according to a news release.

Police found that Ewart did not have a driver's license, then discovered a loaded handgun in the car's center console during an impound search.

Ewart was arrested on charges of criminal possession of a weapon and several traffic violations, police said. His arraignment information at First District Court in Hempstead was not immediately available.
