Police are searching for a man who attacked a gas station attendant during an attempted robbery in Hempstead early Tuesday, stabbing the victim in the arm before fleeing on foot.

Nassau County police said the 64-year-old attendant, whose identity was not released, was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident occurred shortly after 3 a.m. at the Vega gas station on Henry Street.

Police said the attendant was pumping gas when the attacker walked up and asked for change. When the attendant walked into the office to get change, the robber reached into the attendant's pocket, attempted to steal cash from him, police said. A struggle ensued, police said, and the attacker stabbed the attendant once in the left arm with a knife.

Police are searching for the robber, who fled on foot after the attack.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the attempted robbery to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
