A Hempstead Village police officer is in stable condition after a man struck him in the head with a piece of concrete late Thursday, Nassau County police said.
Third Squad detectives did not release the name of the officer, who was taken to a hospital after being hit outside a McDonald's at 320 Peninsula Blvd. at 11:59 p.m., according to a news release.
The officer went to the restaurant to remove a man who was causing a disturbance, the news release said.
After taking Oscar Guerra, 26, out of the McDonald's, the officer re-entered the restaurant. When he went back outside, Guerra "hit the officer in the head" with a piece of concrete, the release said.
Guerra, who has no known address, is charged with second-degree assault and third-degree criminal mischief. He is scheduled to be arraigned Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
