Police detectives are investigating the shooting early Monday of a 36-year-old Long Beach resident in the city.

The victim was at Azalea Court and National Boulevard at 1:15 a.m. when he was approached by a male "who pulled out a dark colored handgun and began shooting at him," Long Beach police said in a Tuesday news release.

The victim, who suffered gunshot wounds to the right thigh, right arm and abdomen, rode his bicycle to Long Beach police headquarters, where the Long Beach Fire Department responded to treat him, police Lt. Eric Cregeen said in the release.

Police said the victim was taken to Nassau University Medical Center. His condition was not known.
