A 25-year-old man was critically wounded, shot in the leg and torso, in an early morning incident in Uniondale Friday, Nassau County police said.

Police could not immediately say if anyone had been arrested in the shooting.

The incident occurred at 1:20 a.m. near Park Avenue and Lee Road, just north of the Southern State Parkway, police said. The gunshots were detected by a Shotspotter monitor.

Police said an officer responding to the scene, not far from Uniondale Avenue, observed a vehicle fleeing the area "at a high rate of speed with the headlights off."

The officer conducted a traffic stop on Uniondale Avenue near Midwood Street, just south of Front Street, and discovered the wounded man.

The victim was shot once in the leg and once in the torso and was taken to a hospital in critical but stable condition.

Several shell casings were found at the scene, police said.

The investigation remains ongoing.
