Police: Man, 30, shot at girl in Hempstead

A Uniondale man was arrested Thursday and charged with attempted murder in a shooting Wednesday in Hempstead, police said.

According to the Nassau County Police Department's Third Squad, Timothy Alston, 30, of 638 Cedar St. in Uniondale became involved in a verbal dispute with a 16-year-old girl and three males who were walking together near Jerusalem Avenue and Searing Street in Hempstead just before 6 p.m. Wednesday. Det. Vincenzo Vacchiano of the Third Squad said police suspect Alston, who he said has prior convictions in Nassau County, knew the girl.

Police said Alston went into a nearby apartment, grabbed a handgun, came back and began firing shots at the group. One bullet struck the ground near one of the male victim's feet, while another bullet struck an unoccupied 2012 Honda sedan that was parked nearby. No one was injured, Vacchiano said.

Alston was arrested Thursday in Brentwood in a joint effort with the Bureau of Special Operations and the Electronics Squad. He is being charged with second-degree attempted murder, first- and second-degree criminal use of a firearm, first-degree attempted assault, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, first-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree aggravated harassment. He is due to be arraigned Friday in First District Court in Hempstead.
