Police: Man caught dragging stolen items in garbage pail
First Squad detectives arrested a Hicksville man on charges of allegedly burglarizing two businesses in Merrick this week after he was found dragging away items from one of the businesses in a garbage pail, Nassau County police said.
Michael Kenney, 41, of 32A Liszt St., was arrested Tuesday morning after he fled one scene in Merrick on a bicycle, police said.
A witness said Kenney broke the glass on the front door of the Smith Street Deli, 241 Smith St., at about 4 a.m., police said. The witness called 911, and police responded and chased Kenney by foot.
He was found dragging contents from the burglarized deli next to him in a garbage can as he bicycled, police said. The property was valued at more than $1,365, police said.
Police said before stealing from the deli in Merrick, Kenney had tried unsuccessfully to break into another deli on Broadway Avenue in Freeport at about 3:30 a.m. He fled, then hit the Smith Street location.
Kenney also burglarized Cards Unlimited, 39 Merrick Ave., on Monday at about 2:30 a.m. by breaking the front glass door with a rock and taking about $2,300 in property, police said.
Kenney is charged with burglary, attempted burglary and two counts of criminal mischief. He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
