Police: Man 'coughed up' coke on parkway
A Queens man was arrested and charged with drug possession after police said he literally coughed up the evidence in front of a police officer searching his car.
Fabian Illera, 37, of Fresh Meadows, was arrested Wednesday evening during the traffic stop on the westbound Southern State Parkway near Merrick Avenue in North Bellmore, State Police said.
Police said a trooper stopped Illera for driving his gray Honda Odyssey 81 mph in a 55 mph zone at 9:20 p.m.
During questioning, police said Illera gave "conflicting accounts" about where he was headed -- and was asked to give his consent for a vehicle search, which he agreed to.
But, police said, while speaking to the trooper, who had his K-9 partner at the scene, Illera "coughed up, from his mouth," three small bottles containing cocaine.
He was arrested, charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. Illera is due back in court Monday. He was arraigned Thursday and released on a $1,500 cash bail.
