Police: Man fends off would-be muggers
A would-be mugging victim fought off robbers demanding cash in Massapequa Park on Saturday morning -- who ended up fleeing with no cash, Nassau County police said.
The failed robbery happened near Roosevelt Avenue and Monroe Street when the two robbers -- later identified as Kenneth Hutchinson, 19, of 1837 Lurting Ave.; and Anthony Raia, 19, of 1035 Neill Ave., both of the Bronx -- approached the victim and demanded money, police said.
The victim said no, and when the robbers pounced, he fought back and they fled.
After the victim called 911, cops doing a canvass found Hutchinson and Raia nearby and later linked them to the robbery.
They were arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Hempstead on an attempted robbery charge. Raia is also charged with illegal drug possession for alprazolam pills cops found on him. Bail information on the duo wasn't immediately available.
Alprazolam is an addictive medicine that's prescribed for anxiety disorders and panic disorder.
