Police: Man fled Hempstead traffic stop
A Brentwood man was arrested on assault charges Thursday after resisting arrest during a traffic stop in Hempstead, Nassau County police said.
First Squad detectives said Erick Landeros, 32, of 39 Patton St., ran from a car after he was pulled over at about 9:45 p.m. on Jerusalem Avenue. Police said Landeros fled after they found him driving with a suspended license.
One officer ran after Landeros and another followed in a police car, police said. Landeros entered a yard on Henry Street and tried to climb a chain-link fence, cutting his hands in the attempt, they said.
When he was overtaken by police, he "became combative, refusing their commands and attempts to handcuff him," according to a release.
During the struggle with Landeros, one officer injured a hand and two officers were exposed to the defendant's blood, the release said.
Police were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were treated and released. Landeros also was hospitalized, but police did not release information on his injuries.
Landeros is charged with assault, resisting arrest, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and several traffic violations, the release said.
Arraignment information was not immediately available.
