A 60-year-old man, who police believed had a heart attack behind the wheel, drove onto a sidewalk, knocked down a fence and crashed into the bleachers at Bethpage High School Thursday afternoon, police said.

Richard Horan of Bethpage was transported to North Shore-Plainview Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:45 p.m. No one was injured at the school.

The one-car crash occurred at 5:08 p.m., according to Nassau County police. They said that as Horan drove his 2001 Nissan south on Silber Avenue, he apparently went into cardiac arrest at the intersection with Cherry Avenue.

His car then crossed the sidewalk, plowed through the fence and struck the bleachers.

A postmortem exam is pending and the car was impounded for safety tests.
