A Hempstead man was arrested Wednesday after two Hempstead police detectives said they saw him throw a bag over a fence containing a handgun and what "appeared to be marijuana," police said.

Richard D. Edwards, 25, of South Franklin Street, was arrested at 11:17 p.m. and charged with second-degree and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, as well as fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana. He was scheduled for arraignment Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Police said Edwards was walking on Elm Avenue and tossed a bag over a fence. A Glock 27 pistol was recovered from the bag, as well as "what appeared to be marijuana," police said.
