Police probe Elmont house explosion
Police and fire officials are investigating the cause of an early-morning explosion that leveled a home in Elmont Tuesday. The house was unoccupied at the time of the incident, police and fire officials said.
No one was injured, police and fire officials said, though one firefighter was transported to a local hospital to have his eye flushed with a rinse.
A 911 caller reported the explosion on Lincoln Street at 1:35 a.m., Nassau County police said.
Neighboring homes were evacuated as a precaution, officials said. The cause of the explosion and resulting fire was not immediately known.
Officials said Nassau County Fire Marshals investigators and police Arson / Bomb Squad detectives are on scene.
The block where the explosion occurred is located between Atherton and Estelle avenues, police said.
Volunteers from Elmont, Franklin Square, Valley Stream, Malverne, Floral Park, Stewart Manor, West Hempstead, Lawrence-Cedarhurst, New Hyde Park, Lakeview and the Tactical Rescue Team from North Bellmore worked the incident, fire officials said.
