A Hempstead man faces assault charges after allegedly stabbing another man five times during a fight Wednesday night in Hempstead, Nassau County police said.

Suwadu Kofi Perry, 33, of 96 Patterson Ave., approached another man on Patterson Avenue at about 10:30 p.m., police said, and the two began to argue. That escalated into a fight in which Perry stabbed the other man five times, police said, including once in the left side of his torso, puncturing the man's lung.

Police said the man was in stable condition at a hospital.

Perry was arrested and charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon. He was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead.
