Nassau police have identified the victim of a Tuesday hit and run in Hempstead and are offering up to $5,000 for information about the driver of a gold or tan 1998 Toyota Camry who witnesses say struck a Hempstead High School student riding a bike on Clinton Street.

Oscar Veliz, 16, of Hempstead, was pronounced dead at a hospital Thursday night, two days after he was struck by a motorist who witnesses said was driving a sedan, officials said.

At about 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, Veliz was riding south on Clinton Street near Webb Avenue when he was struck by a gold or tan Camry, police said.

Police said the bike was dragged under the car for a distance and then left at the scene.

The driver did not stop and was last seen heading east on Jackson Avenue.

Witness told police the driver was a man who was about 20 years old and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.

Veliz was a junior at Hempstead High School, acting superintendent Julius Brown said in a statement.

"The Hempstead Board of Education and Administration extend their deepest sympathy to the student's family and friends during this difficult time," Brown said. "He was a good student and well-liked by his classmates and teachers."

Grief counselors were available to students in need, he said.

Detectives are requesting anyone with information regarding this crime to contact the Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls are confidential and all callers will remain anonymous.
