Gunshots went off in an Elmont neighborhood hours after midnight on New Year's Day - but Nassau County police said they got no 911 calls.

Cops found out what happened only after a man walking his dog on L Street found five shell casings there at about 12:15 p.m., police said.

Neighbors later told officers canvassing the area as a result of the dog walker's discovery that at about 2 a.m. they'd heard what sounded like shots being fired, police said.

Investigators with the Elmont-based Fifth Squad detectives are asking anyone with information about the incident to call their hotline: 800-244-TIPS.
